Church Service and Lunch with the Congregation!

by Ashley Cushman | July 2, 2023 2:17 PM

We attended church and afterward provided lunch for the congregation. Members of the church also brought various snacks—some even homemade! It was a wonderful opportunity to get to know the community we will be serving this week.

Braving the Rain!

by Ashley Cushman | July 2, 2023 4:19 PM

Since Sunday is our prep day for the service projects during the week ahead, we made a trip in the pouring rain to gather supplies at a Dollar General almost 10 blocks away. We braved the rain without umbrellas on the way there, but most of us came back with umbrellas in hand! What a fun memory we have already!

Storage Closet #1

by Ashley Cushman | July 3, 2023 8:28 PM

We tackled all kinds of different projects throughout the church today. There are two storage rooms/closets we are cleaning out this week. This is the first one!

Storage Closet #2

by Ashley Cushman | July 3, 2023 8:31 PM

This is the second storage closet we are cleaning out, which is located behind the kitchen in a stairwell (the closet is through a door at the far left of the picture). This closet is in a very accessible spot, so it will be put to good use in the many years to come!

Replacing Lightbulbs

by Ashley Cushman | July 3, 2023 8:34 PM

A couple of the team members were put on lightbulb duty for a large part of the day. This job included changing out old bulbs in exit signs, hallway chandeliers, and the lights in the kitchen and cafeteria area. They made their way through all three floors today… well done!

Fresh Landscaping!

by Ashley Cushman | July 3, 2023 8:46 PM

One of the big projects to tackle this week is the landscaping along the sides of the building. Tasks for today included pulling weeds, tilling the soil, laying down weed barrier, and then evening out the soil to be ready for plants that will be added later in the week. One side of the building is done, and tomorrow we will finish the other and maybe start planting. We’ve already had many people stop to chat while walking past as we were working, asking what our plans were for the space and then becoming very excited when they heard beautiful plants were going to be added. The work we’re doing here is hopefully going to continue to help gain people’s attention and draw them to check out the church in the future!

Fun Time at the Beach!

by Kimberly Buettner | July 3, 2023 8:47 PM

After our first hard day working, we took time after dinner to go to the beach and the park. It was fun being able to decompress from the work day and have some laughs. We are super pumped for what tomorrow has in store for us!

Plant Time!

by Kimberly Buettner | July 5, 2023 12:30 PM

After we put down weed barrier, we planted some plants! We were so excited to be able to put some more color on the streets. It was a challenge planting under the weed barrier, but we did it!

So Much Trash!

by Ashley Cushman | July 5, 2023 12:39 PM

We have filled so many trash bags with miscellaneous things from the large storage room we are clearing out. Here’s a picture of some team members gathering them all together!

We finished cleaning out the food pantry yesterday and washed the many dishes that were stored in there. We then reorganized them all for the church’s future use!

After a long day working, we decided to go for a walk. And our walk ended with some ice cream! It was so good and a nice treat to end the day!

Care for Real!

by Kimberly Buettner | July 5, 2023 4:45 PM

This morning we volunteered at the local food bank. We helped grab groceries, fill carts, refill shelves, and fill bags. We were able to help 236 families. We had so much fun and the other staff was so fun to work with!

by Ashley Cushman | July 5, 2023 4:51 PM

After finishing up various tasks back at the church (watering the plants, cleaning up the dirt on the sidewalks, cleaning the kitchen, sweeping, and mopping), we took a fun game break!

Lincoln Park Zoo

by Ashley Cushman | July 7, 2023 8:32 AM

We began our recreation day by going to the Lincoln Park Zoo. It was absolutely perfect weather, and we got to see so many different kinds of animals and spend some great time together as a team after a busy week of service!

Ending the Day Well!

by Ashley Cushman | July 7, 2023 8:43 AM

After stopping for lunch at Portillo’s, we made our way to Millenium Park to see the Bean (aka the Cloud Gate!!). We made a quick stop at the Crown Fountain and then rode the bus to Navy Pier where we spent the afternoon checking out all of the various shops, trying some REALLY spicy hot sauce, and walking along the pier. We got to play some cornhole and Jumbo Jenga before heading out to get pizza. We ordered pizza back at the church from Giordano’s and ended the night with a debrief of the week and final devotional before playing some card games before heading to bed.

Saying Goodbye…

by Ashley Cushman | July 7, 2023 8:51 AM

It was such a blessing to have the opportunity to serve the community of Edgewater in Chicago this week! Each individual’s unique gifts were utilized in incredible ways, and we could not have finished all of the work tasks without each team member’s help. We are thankful for this wonderful experience and are leaving with fuller hearts than when we arrived—all glory and praise be to God!
